The Alliance to Save Energy’s Green Campus Program seeks two for-credit interns with an interest in energy efficiency on the UC Berkeley Campus beginning fall 2011. Based in Washington, DC, the Alliance to Save Energy (www.ase.org) is a nonprofit organization
that promotes energy efficiency worldwide to achieve a healthier economy, a cleaner environment, and greater energy security. The Green Campus Program seeks energy savings on 16 California university and college campuses with the four goals of outreach, measurable energy savings, green jobs education, and academic outreach. Interns will work under the Operational Excellence Energy Management Initiative to reduce campus-wide energy consumption with the goal of $3-4 million saved each year. Interns will receive 2 units of academic credit for 3-4 hours of work each week during the fall 2011 semester. Student will enroll in ME 98/198 with faculty sponsor Professor Paul Wright, A. Martin Berlin Chair in Mechanical Engineering. Students will gain invaluable training in practical energy
efficiency skills and use these skills to realize measurable savings on campus.
Projects will include:
· developing an energy audit protocol for campus buildings
· conducting energy audits
· developing marketing materials to encourage energy savings
· developing an incentive system to reward energy savings
· educational outreach
Specific tasks for these projects will include:
· Participating in weekly check-in team meetings
· Initial skills trainings
· Communicating and meeting with the campus community via phone, e-mail, and in person
· Developing worksheets to calculate energy and water savings
· Crafting energy and water-saving recommendations
· Hosting launch events for the OE initiative
Candidates – especially freshman and sophomores – who are interested in a yearlong position or longer, will be favored. Academic credit will also be available for spring 2012. However, other
applicants should not be discouraged from applying. Applicants interested in a paid position with the Green Campus Program should recognize that many volunteers/for-credit interns continue
on to become hired after a year of involved participation.
Applicants must:
· Be currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students (underclassmen preferred).
· Possess excellent written and oral communications skills.
◦ NOTE: Any position associated with the Green Campus Program requires EXTENSIVE email and in-person communication skills; applicants must be available to check and send email daily and be on campus frequently enough for team meetings and organized on-campus events.
· Be comfortable with the basic functions of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
· Have leadership and teamwork experience.
· Have effective time management skills.
· Have a passion for energy efficiency.
Desired Skills and Qualities (not mandatory):
· Strong experience with on-campus environmental activism
· Engineering or technical knowledge of energy systems
· Graphic design, newsletter design, web design, or editing skills
· Metrics calculations and data analysis
· Familiarity / previous working relationship with campus environmental groups and campus staff and administrators
Novice applicants needn’t be intimidated by this list; if applicants have a great passion for the internship, we are aware and eager to assist those that need training in audit practices and other skills.
